OFFICER CANDIDATE
SCHOOL INFORMATION WORKSHOP: 3 May
2008
The 70th
Regiment will host an Officer Candidate School Information Workshop
this weekend. During this presentation, the entire OCS program will
be covered, including enrollment requirements. There is also a tour
of the OCS barracks.
Sending Soldiers to
this workshop and the OCS program benefits the MDARNG. Some might
see it as losing a good Soldier or NCO, but overall it improves the
Guard and individual units immensely as well as the individual
Soldier’s personal development.

currently a graduate student intern at Baltimore’s MICA (Maryland
Institute College of Art.) He would like to offer a series of
Saturday workshops for all MD Guardsmen who are serving or are vets
(retired or otherwise.) These workshops will allow service members
to be able to tell their story – esp. those who have served with
OIF/OEF -- through the medium of art, specifically clay tiles. The
workshops will begin in April, and will run through June. In July
the completed artwork will be put on display at MICA. Although not
required it is preferred that those that participate in the

MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT SEMINAR:
31 May – 1 June
This past weekend
14 couples attended the Marriage Enrichment seminar. The program is
also known as Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP)
seminar or “Strong Bonds” (Active Duty version.) The staff has
received positive feedback and know that there are others who would
like to attend. Because of the high demand and re-deployment cycle,
we have added dates for Marriage Enrichment. They are as follows:
-
31 MAY - 01 JUN 08
-
25 - 27 JUL 08
-
13 - 14 SEP 08
The May program
will be held at the Crowne Plaza, 2004 Greenspring Dr., Timonium, MD
21093 starting at 0800 Saturday, 31 May.
The purpose of this
program is to help service members and their spouses enhance
relationships and form strong communication skills. This class is
instructed by our trained Chaplains. Attendees will be trained with
the skills to enhance their relationship prior to as well as
following deployment. The workshop will offer instruction on ways
to improve marital relationships, cope with separation, and promote
successful reunification. The workshop will feature short sessions
and allow time for dialogue between participating couples.
Participants will be taught in such a manner to allow respective
couples to decide how and when to implement what they are taught.
Priority will be
given to couples who have a service member who has returned from
deployment since 11 September 2001. Couples are expected to arrive
not later than 0800 hours, Saturday, 31 May 2008 and are expected to
attend all scheduled seminars and remain overnight on Saturday. If
you live 55 miles or greater from the Crowne Plaza, you may arrive
on Friday, 30 May 2008. Childcare will NOT be available at the
site. Couples will be given the opportunity to renew their vows on
Sunday. Dress code for all participants is civilian, casual attire.
Soldiers should
contact their unit to see if funds are available for travel
reimbursement and if split training is authorized. Army National
Guard participating spouses will be placed on Invitational Travel
Orders (ITO’s) by the State Family Program Office. Meals will be
reimbursed as will mileage for privately owned vehicles. Travel
vouchers will be completed before participants leave the seminar on
Sunday. Rooms will be contracted and paid for by the State Family
Program Office. Incidental expenses must be paid for by the service
member/spouse, such as room coordination to participate in a
military status for pay purposes.
Remember:
Marriage Enrichment is for ALL couples – no matter how wonderful
your marriage -- it assists in communication among other areas. If
you are interested in attending the seminar, contact Bill Turner at
william.s.turner@us.army.mil or 410-576-2990. Look for

SCHOLARSHIPS
Not applying for scholarships is like turning down free money!
Towson University
will begin offering Thank You Grants to qualified U.S. military
personnel and recent veterans, beginning with the fall 2008 term.
As the name
suggests, Thank You Grants will reward active-duty personnel and
veterans for their service by helping to defray the cost of
attending the university. The grants are intended to supplement
Veterans Administration (VA) education benefits, which no longer
cover full tuition for many veterans. In implementing the Thank You
Grant program, TU seeks to reduce the financial strain these men and
women often face while pursuing their degrees.
The Thank You Grant
program awards up to $500 per term for eight terms for eligible
students: newly admitted, currently enrolled and readmitted veterans
or active-duty service members. Full-time students who meet all
criteria would receive $500, with part-time students receiving $250
per term. Recipients must have degree-seeking status at TU.
Applicants are also
required to have been on active-duty status for no fewer than 12
months; veterans must have been released from service after October
24, 2001. Those on release status must be eligible for VA benefits.

The Hodson Trust
and four Maryland colleges, Hood College, Johns Hopkins University,

awarding annual undergraduate and graduate scholarships to eligible
veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Each of the four
schools will award up to a total of three scholarships a year
beginning with academic year 2007-08 until academic year 2012. The
scholarships will meet 100 percent of each participating
institution’s published annual tuition, room, board, books and
mandatory student fees, not otherwise covered by federal, state and
outside assistance. For more info, go to
www.mdva.state.md.us/scholarships.html
In addition to the
MDARNG State Education programs and the Montgomery GI Bill (Federal
education assistance), your state delegate might have their own
scholarship program. Check with your local delegate’s office or
website to inquire about a little-advertised program that can help
with college tuition for you or your family.
The White House Internship provides an opportunity to
experience day-to-day life at the White House while working on a
variety of tasks and projects. In addition to normal office duties,
interns attend weekly lectures, volunteer at special events,
participate in tours, and contribute to a community service project
in the Washington, D.C. area. White House Internships are unpaid
positions and participants are responsible for arranging their own
transportation and housing. Approximately 100 interns are chosen
each spring, summer, and fall to participate in this highly
competitive program.

For the second year, a group of NFL, NFL Europe, AFL and CFL
football players have sponsored several million dollars worth of
$199 SAT and ACT test prep programs for every family in the U.S.
Military (all branches-active or retired). Specifically, the
sponsorship allows any military person (active or retired) to
request as many programs as they need for the students in their
lives. The Department of Defense has created a secure website to
quickly confirm a person's military status. Personnel can access the
confirmation and request pages through several military related
associations and organizations, including Military Home Front
website for families, which offers access to the forms to confirm
military status and to process the order. Programs ship to domestic
U.S.addresses and APO addresses. The sponsorship covers the regular
purchase price of $199 and the family pays only the S&H. To learn

VACATIONS FOR VETS PROGRAM:
20 – 22 June 2008
The Greenwell
Foundation, with the support of the local community in St. Mary’s
County, MD,
has developed a
program to offer some respite for our nation's injured service
members. "Vacations for Vets" offers weekend stays at our Francis
Knott Lodge to disabled veterans currently undergoing treatment at
DC Metro area military hospitals and their families. Each weekend
can accommodate six soldiers with an average of three family members
each, for a total of 24 people each weekend. The participants and
their families members of all ages, including young children,
grandparents, servicemen and women on their first tour and career
officers, are invited. Participants are eligible based on their
interest and with doctor's approval. No other criteria, including
race, gender, or religion applies. These vacations are provided at
no cost to the veterans and their families. The program gives our
valued vets a break from the daily demands of recovering from their
traumatic experiences. It's their way of saying thank you and
honoring those who have suffered while serving our country.
Each weekend begins
on Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday after lunch. Transportation
is available from the medical center to Greenwell State Park and
back. During these weekends, service members and their families can
participate in activities such as horseback riding, kayaking,
hiking, picnicking, fishing, sailing, etc. While activities are
offered, the weekend is loosely structured to allow families time to
relax and be together in whatever way is most comfortable for them.
Because of Greenwell's universally accessible facilities there are
no limitations on participants with physical disabilities.
Accessible equipment, such as golf carts, adaptive fishing poles and
all terrain wheelchairs, is available so that everyone can
experience the park as independently as possible. Meals and snacks
are provided by local community groups who donate the food and their
time to prepare and serve the meals.
If you know any
wounded veterans and their families who might like to participate in
the Vacations for Vets(tm) program, please contact Vacation for Vets
