NEW ONLINE RECORDS REQUEST SYSTEM

The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans or their next of kin to gain access to military personnel records – www.vetrecs.archives.gov.

This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of his DD-214 for employment purposes, applies for benefits, or needs proof of service.  NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files.  Other individuals with a need for documents must still complete the Standard Form 180, which can be downloaded from the online website.  Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur when NPRC has to ask veterans for additional information will be minimized.

VAS – NOT AFFILIATED WITH VA

An organization called Veterans Affairs Services (VAS) is providing benefit and general information on VA and gathering personal information on veterans.  Veterans could very easily think this organization is the actual VA, but they may be receiving inaccurate or out of date information, or possibly being misled as to their benefits.  VAS may be gaining access to military personnel through their close resemblance to the VA name and seal.  Their website -- http://www.vaservices.org/us/index.html -- can also be confused with the actual official VA website.

They tell unit commanders that they are from Veterans Affairs Services, or "VA Services" and that they will do a briefing on VA benefits.  They do some sort of briefing on the VA benefits and then sell their financial products to the service men and women.  They also collect a lot of personal information about the Soldiers, which could be used to continue to market insurance, investments and other products.

If you have any examples of VAS acts that violate chapter 59 of Title 38 United States Code, such as VAS employees assisting veterans in the preparation and presentation of claims for benefits, please call Michael Daugherty, Staff Attorney, at 202.273.8636 or email him at michael.daugherty@va.gov.
